SFB 1607 at the University of Cologne’s Sustainability Days 2025 – Rethinking Research Responsibly
SFB 1607 proudly joined the Sustainability Days 2025 hosted by the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Cologne with an interactive stand focused on sustainability in biomedical research.
Under the motto “Lab4Future”, our team from the lab for translational experimental ophthalmology (TEO-C) showcased hands-on initiatives for more sustainable lab practices: reusing single-use materials where possible, reducing plastic waste, increasing the use of biobased products, and optimizing glove usage. A particular highlight was the -80°C Freezer Challenge, demonstrating how adjusting freezer temperatures to -70°C can significantly reduce energy consumption without compromising sample integrity.
We also shared our commitment to systematic waste separation and energy-saving routines like equipment booking systems and the “Lights Off?!” initiative.
The lively exchange with visitors confirmed what we firmly believe: responsible science includes sustainability. We are proud to contribute to a research culture that not only pushes scientific boundaries but also cares for our planet.
