Prof. Dr. Verena Prokosch Appointed Director of Mainz University Eye Clinic

As of February 1, Verena Prokosch has assumed the position of Director of the Universitäts-Augenklinik Mainz, succeeding Norbert Pfeiffer.

Prof. Prokosch studied medicine at the universities of Münster, Valencia, Bergen, and Zurich. She completed her specialist training at the University Hospital Münster before joining the Mainz University Eye Clinic as Senior Physician with a focus on glaucoma. In 2020, she accepted a professorship in Cologne, where she held the Chair of Glaucoma and headed the Laboratory for Experimental Ocular Immunology.

An internationally recognized glaucoma specialist, her clinical expertise spans the full range of conservative and surgical glaucoma therapies. Her research focuses on mechanisms of retinal ganglion cell degeneration and regeneration in glaucoma and has been continuously funded by the DFG. She has received multiple prestigious awards, including research prizes from AECOS, RWA, and the DOG.

Prof. Prokosch will continue her role as Principal Investigator within SFB 1607 and remain Co-Speaker.
