Poster prize awarded for the first time at the SFB 1607 retreat

During the retreat of SFB 1607 at the Catholic Social Institute in Siegburg on January 9 and 10, a poster prize was awarded for the first time to doctoral students of the SFB for outstanding scientific achievements and their presentation. The prize is part of the SFB’s Integrated Graduate School “Eye and Inflammation,” which is headed by Prof. Dr. Verena Prokosch and Prof. Dr. Felix Bock. It recognizes innovative research work that was presented in a gallery-style presentation and met with great enthusiasm from colleagues and high-profile invited guests. All participants in the retreat were asked to vote in the categories of research idea, research method, poster design, graphic representations, and scientific texts.

We congratulate Leonie Schroers, doctoral student in Project C04, supervised by Prof. Dr. Thomas Wunderlich, on winning first place. Her poster on her research topic “Changes in the tumor microenvironment during the pathogenesis and therapy of conjunctival melanoma” impressed the retreat participants in all categories.
Second place went to Johanna Mann (Project A05, research topic “The role of limbal mesenchymal stem cells in corneal (lymph)angiogenesis, inflammation, and UV-induced pterygium pathogenesis,” AG Notara), and third place went to Hanna Hübbe (Project B03, research topic “CD83-based immunomodulation in inflammation of the ocular surface such as dry eye,” AG Howaldt). Congratulations on these great achievements!

The work presented was characterized by high scientific quality, methodological diversity, and great relevance to current ophthalmological research. The invited leading scientists were impressed by the commitment and scientific progress achieved by the doctoral students to date. “The level of the contributions was exceptionally high and reflects the strength and dynamism of our Collaborative Research Center,” affirmed Professor Claus Cursiefen, spokesperson for SFB 1607 and Director of Ophthalmology at the University Hospital Cologne.
The retreat offered scientists at all career levels a platform for intensive professional exchange, lively discussions, and networking across disciplines. It once again underscored the central role of the Sonderforschungsbereich as a place of cutting-edge research in ophthalmology and inspiring collaboration.
