SFB 1607 celebrates World Sight Day 2025 – United for a Clearer Future
On 9 October 2025, the world celebrates World Sight Day – a global call to recognize the importance of healthy vision and eye care. The Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 1607 and the Department of Ophthalmology at University Hospital Cologne proudly join this celebration, continuing their mission to combat preventable blindness through cutting-edge research – as also highlighted at the DOG 2025 conference in Berlin.
Good vision enhances well-being, education, and economic opportunity. Yet, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of people affected by avoidable vision impairment continues to rise, driven by aging populations, lifestyle factors, and unequal access to care.
Global initiatives such as Vision 2020: The Right to Sight and SPECS 2030, launched by WHO, aim to ensure universal access to quality and affordable eye care services by 2030.
Through its interdisciplinary research, SFB 1607 contributes to pave the way for novel therapeutic approaches against age-related blinding eye diseases.
This World Sight Day, we celebrate progress, raise awareness, and reaffirm our commitment to protecting one of humanity’s most vital senses: sight.
